Get to Know Lisa

I moved to Ames in 1984 where I attended Iowa State University and earned a Bachelor’s of Science degree in elementary education.

I have two adult children, Makenzie and Paul Heddens and am married to John Mageli.

In 2002 I was elected to the Iowa Statehouse where I served until 2019. During my tenure as a State Representative, I had the opportunity to serve on a variety of committees. I also served as the Ranking Member of the Health and Human Services Budget. I am most notably known for my work on mental health and disability issues and to work across party lines to sponsor to passage legislation that provides increased services, greater access and increased opportunities for people with disabilities.

In addition to serving in the statehouse, my private sector work over the past 20 years has included: an advocate at Iowa Protection and Advocacy (now known as Disability Rights Iowa), Access for Special Kids-focusing on special education rules and regulations and as an advocate at the Brain Injury Association. I also was the Service Coordinator for Lutheran Services in Iowa’s People Place’s Family Resource Center, which focused on early childhood, and as executive director for NAMI Central Iowa.

In 2014 I took part in the Ames Citizen Police Academy which provided participants insight of the police department’s operations, procedures, and trainings.

As a Supervisor, I represent Story County on the following boards: Aging Resources of Central Iowa, Ames Mini-Assessors, Board of Health, Ames Economic Development Commission, Central Iowa Workforce Development Region 11 CEO Board, Central Iowa Community Services (CICS), Heart of Iowa Transit Agency (HIRTA), Story County Courthouse Security Committee.

I also serve on the Community Health Initiative – MGMC, Training Center EMS Advisory Committee, and on the Mid-Iowa Community Action (MICA) and The Arc of Story County Board of Directors.

In my free time, I enjoy traveling, spending time with my family, friends and puppy, and listening to music and cooking.
